Research to Revolutionize Chemotherapy
Dr. Cabot is researching drug resistance and has found a gene that allows cancer cells to escape the cytotoxic (cell-killing) effects of chemotherapy. As a result, drugs can be used to inhibit this gene thus resensitizing cancer cells to chemotherapeutic drugs that were previously ineffective. Sensitizing drug-resistant cancer cells also allows a reduction in chemotherapy dosages resulting in fewer side effects. Patient trials should begin in the next 2 years. Copyright 2001.
Shot to Stop Skin Cancer
In 1983 Peggy Maddox had stage IV skin cancer - melanoma. Dr. Morton recommended a new vaccine he developed which doubles the survival rate for those with advanced melanoma. For over 100 years doctors have been pursuing a vaccine to treat cancer and one is just around the corner. Dr. Morton's vaccine, should win FDA approval within 2 years. Peggy believes the vaccine kept her alive to see her children grow up and she remains cancer free.

Melanoma - A New Breakthrough Procedure
Charles was diagnosed with malignant melanoma but thanks to a minimally invasive procedure developed by Dr. Morton, he should make a full recovery. The procedure called lymphatic mapping and sentinel node lymphadenectomy uses a dye and radioactive tracer to identify lymph nodes likely to contain any cancer cells that have spread from the primary tumor. It is done on an out patient basis and is less invasive but it allows doctors to accurately diagnosis the presence of cancer in the lymph node. This procedure results in a 90% chance of being cured.

Cancer Patient Gets Help and Support from a Store
Carolyn had breast cancer and after surgery went through chemotherapy. She was introduced to the Positive Appearance Center at JWCI where she talked with people who knew what she was going through and could help make a real positive difference in her life. The store has hats, wigs, sun block, clothes, prosthetics and many other products that can help cancer patients get back to feeling normal again and feeling positive about themselves.
